How should I prepare for my photoshoot?

What shall I wear? What shall I do with my hair? Will I know what to do? So many questions …. don’t worry. I’ve got some answers here for you!

Firstly, here’s a question for you ….what will you use this headshot for?

Have a think about what you’re going to use this headshot for so that we both know what we’re aiming for; a Linked-in photo will be very different from an actor headshot, which will again differ from a dating profile pic … so let me know what it is you want your headshot for so that we can create the appropriate look.

. Feel free to take a look at some other headshots and bring along examples of shots you like (or send them to me in advance). This Is not compulsory … just something that might make you feel more confident that we’ll get what you want from your session.

What shall I wear?

. Bring a variety of changes of clothes (just tops n jackets). Bring something you always end up putting on when you don’t know what to wear…because you will feel comfortable in that and you’ll be able to relax. But bring other things too …a variety of necklines and colours, maybe a jacket which you feel transforms you, a simple necklace or a hat you like yourself in. A simple black vest is nearly always an absolute winner (for actors)! Denim jackets are always great too for actors. If you’ve chosen a longer session then bring something fun to do a fun shot at the end if you fancy? Crazy hat/glasses/wild coat?

. Make sure your outfit will not detract from your photo … what we’re interested in is your face, so a plain top is best. Whilst patterns are individual they do tend to detract so think about this when selecting your oufits. If you’re an actor you’ll probably remove most of your jewellery, but if you’re having your linked-in/corporate headshot then you’ll probably keep whatever jewellery you feel is really ‘you’. Sometimes a piece of jewellery can put a perfect finishing touch to an image.

What shall I do with my hair?

. Think about your hair and how you’d like it to look. Some clients go get themselves a blowdry beforehand which relaxes them. But no need at all if that’s not your thing; we will try a variety of different hairstyles, guided by you.

What about makeup?

For actors’ headshots we keep make-up to a minimum. Casting directors want to see the real you so that they know whether you’ll be right for the role that they need to fill. Do bring along or put on some powder though to avoid the shine of the light, and to even out your skin.

For corporate or linked-in photos ‘friendly professionalism’ is a good look to aim for; what would you wear to an important meeting? You need to be smart but casual. Dark jackets are usually preferable to lighter ones as they help frame and keep the focus on the face. Make sure your clothes are well-fitted, not oversized, and ironed. If you need help with make-up I can organise for a makeup artist to come along at a quoted price.

I hope that this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to send an email to ask me them via my contact form HERE.
